Chain of Custody (CoC) & Sustainable Timber Products "Timber is the ONLY Renewable Building Material" - Plastic, Steel, Concrete & Aluminium are all commonly used as building materials; whilst they can be recycled, they're not renewable. Timber also helps clean the environment, by soaking up carbon and holding it within the tree; this all helps reduce greenhouse gases. Against this, the energy required to produce many of these other materials, particularly aluminium smelting, significantly adds to the global carbon emissions problem.

As a responsible, long standing timber specialist, Brewer's cares deeply about ensuring the future of forests, to ensure all of our futures.

Whilst there are some serious issues concerning the depletion of forests, many causes are not related to timber sourcing - clearance for agriculture, mining and housing are large contributors to the whole problem.

Modern analysis of sustainability shows that the vast majority of timber used in the UK is 'sustainable', coming from Northern Hemisphere forests. Softwoods are far and away the most widely used materials in volume terms, with temperate hardwoods filling a large part of the remaining balance. Most North American, Canadian & European forestry is sustainable and it is also usually accredited. Tropical hardwoods make up a very small percentage of the total volume used in the UK and of these, many are also 'sustainable'.

Brewer's website carries a great deal of information, with links to many other sites of interest - account customers are also provided with regular news updates on this constantly changing subject.

There is a growing demand for 'sustainably certified' timber, sometimes requiring a 'Chain of Custody' (CoC) from various accreditation agencies including PEFC, FSC, CSA, SFI & MTTC.

BM TRADA Leader In Certification

CoC is a system designed to allow full trace ability, at any stage, right back to the forest and the tree's position within it. There are a variety of schemes available, with differing levels of sophistication. Brewer's have been certificated by TRADA (Timber Research And Development Association), allowing us a CoC on a wide range of timber products and services. TRADA are the leading certification body for a wide range of timber processes including CoC. Full details can be found at www.tbrewer.co.uk.

Brewer's expertise in timber products can help to potentially identify alternative products that can replace other building materials - Glulam, LVL (laminated veneer lumber) & Finger Jointed Sections are just some examples. Please contact the sales teams for advice and assistance.
